All Zelda Ocarina of Time Secret Grotto/Secret Hole locations

Secret Grottos (also known as secret holes) are obscured, hidden locations you can visit throughout Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. That said, these secret holes are much more visible in the Switch 2 remake as opposed to the original game, but they're still easily missed! Some of them also need opening before you can enter…

To help you track down all of these hidden locations in Hyrule, here are all Zelda Ocarina of Time Secret Grotto locations.

Zelda Ocarina of Time Secret Grotto locations

There are a total of 36 Secret Grottos (also known as secret holes) in Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and most of them hide away useful items, upgrades, and more that you should definitely spend some time collecting.

The below table lists all Secret Grottos and their locations, and also features a checklist so you can keep track of which you have and haven't found. It's also worth noting that the two Secret Grottos at the bottom of this list can only be encountered as Child Link, whereas every other hole can be visited during either timeline!

Secret Grotto Location Secret Grotto #1 Zora Domain Secret Grotto #2 Zora River Secret Grotto #3 Zora River Secret Grotto #4 Zora River Secret Grotto #5 Sacred Grove Secret Grotto #6 Sacred Grove Secret Grotto #7 Sacred Grove Secret Grotto #8 Lost Woods Secret Grotto #9 Lost Woods Secret Grotto #10 Lost Woods Secret Grotto #11 Kokiri Forest Secret Grotto #12 Lake Hylia Secret Grotto #13 Kakariko Graveyard Secret Grotto #14 Kakariko Graveyard Secret Grotto #15 Kakariko Graveyard Secret Grotto #16 Kakariko Village Secret Grotto #17 Hyrule Field Secret Grotto #18 Hyrule Field Secret Grotto #19 Hyrule Field Secret Grotto #20 Hyrule Field Secret Grotto #21 Hyrule Field Secret Grotto #22 Hyrule Field Secret Grotto #23 Hyrule Field Secret Grotto #24 Hyrule Field Secret Grotto #25 Hyrule Field Secret Grotto #26 Goron City Secret Grotto #27 Gerudo Valley Secret Grotto #28 Gerudo Valley Secret Grotto #29 Gerudo Fortress Secret Grotto #30 Evil Desert Colossus Secret Grotto #31 Death Mountain Crater Secret Grotto #32 Death Mountain Crater Secret Grotto #33 Death Mountain Trail Secret Grotto #34 Death Mountain Trail Secret Grotto #35 - Child Link only Hyrule Castle Secret Grotto #36 - Child Link only Lon Lon Ranch

Secret Grotto #1: Zora Domain

On the patch of land that's down the stairs in the north of the Zora Domain, there's a Secret Grotto obscured by some shrubbery (shown below). You need to place a Bomb on top of it to open it and head inside.

Inside the Grotto, you'll find a bunch of Blue Rupees scattered across the floor. That's it!

In the original game, this Secret Grotto requires the Song of Storms to open and contains a Fairy Fountain instead.

Secret Grotto #2: Zora River

In the middle of the Zora River, there's an island covered in shrubbery that has a Secret Grotto surrounded by rocks in the middle of it (shown below). You'll need to use a Bomb to open it.

Inside, you'll find a Fairy Fountain that can be used to restore your Health and Magic Meter.

Secret Grotto #3: Zora River

From the last Secret Grotto, follow this patch of land over to the south of your map, where you can find another Secret Grotto obscured by some shrubbery.

Inside, you'll find a Gossip Stone and a chest that contains a Business Scrub Seed. During Link's child timeline, this Secret Grotto also contains a cucco that can be used to grab the Heart Piece on the pillar in the Zora River area.

In the original game, the chest in this Secret Grotto contains 20 Rupees instead.

Secret Grotto #4: Zora River

From the last Secret Grotto, head northwest. In the northwestern corner, just a short walk from the Zora River's entrance, there's another Secret Grotto surrounded by rocks (shown below). To open it, you need to play the Song of Storms.

Inside, you'll find a Gossip Stone and four smashable pots that contain items such as Rupees, Bombs, and Arrows.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains two Business Scrubs. One of which sells the Green Potion for 40 Rupees, while the other sells the Red Potion for 40 Rupees.

Secret Grotto #5: Sacred Grove

From the warp pad in the Sacred Grove (which you can quickly reach by playing the Minuet of the Forest song), turn around and look at the southeast corner of the area to find this Secret Grotto. To open it, you'll need to use a Bomb.

Inside, you'll find four icy blocks directly in front of you. Play the Song of Time to make them disappear, and you'll then find a Gossip Stone and a chest containing a Business Scrub Seed.

In the original game, you need to use the Song of Storms to open this Secret Grotto. Inside, you'll also find two Business Scrubs instead. One of them sells the Green Potion for 40 Rupees, while the other sells the Red Potion for 40 Rupees.

Secret Grotto #6: Sacred Grove

From the last Secret Grotto, go down the stairs in the Sacred Grove and into the labyrinth-like area that contains the Club Moblin as Adult Link. (As Child Link, there are Mad Scrubs here instead.) Go past the Moblin and straight ahead; you should arrive at a ladder and our next Secret Grotto (shown below).

Inside, you'll find a Fairy Fountain that can be used to restore your Health and Magic Meter.

Secret Grotto #7: Sacred Grove

The next Secret Grotto is found at the very beginning of the Sacred Grove area, just after the entrance but before the mini-labyrinth. (This is where Link fights a Wolfos during the adult timeline.)

Against the wall on the right (if you're facing the labyrinth), you'll find this Secret Grotto (shown below). To open it, you need to play the Song of Storms.

Inside, you'll find yourself in a fight against two Wolfos enemies. Remember to target their backs, and once they've been felled, a chest containing a Purple Rupee will appear.

Secret Grotto #8: Lost Woods

Exit the Sacred Grove and enter the Lost Woods. Directly beside the entrance to Sacred Grove here, there's a large boulder you can destroy using a Bomb to reveal the next Secret Grotto (shown below).

The Lost Woods map admittedly isn't the most useful for tracking specific locations, but for the sake of consistency, I've included it anyway.

Inside, you'll find two Business Scrubs. Attack them then speak to them; one of them will sell you the Biggest Deku Nut Bag upgrade for 40 Rupees, while the other will offer to sell you bundles of 10 or 30 Arrows and a Magic Jar (which will restore some of your Magic Meter for you) during Link's adult timeline.

If you visit here during Link's child timeline, the latter Business Scrub will sell bundles of 10 or 30 Deku Seeds and a Magic Jar instead.

Secret Grotto #9: Lost Woods

From the Sacred Grove entrance in the Lost Woods, go into the tree trunk on your left. Then, head right twice through the following tree trunks. In the next area, go straight ahead to find this Secret Grotto obscured by some shrubbery (shown below).

Inside, you'll find the Forest Stage! Here, you can equip various masks (which you'll unlock by completing the mask quest) and stand on the empty tree stump here to show them off to the Scrubs and earn a range of rewards.

Below, I've listed everything you can unlock in the Forest Stage, and how to unlock it:

  • Bigger Deku Nut Bag - Wear the Mask of Truth.
  • Biggest Deku Sticks Bag - Wear the Skull Mask.
  • Deku Nuts and Rupees - Random reward that can be given when wearing other masks.

In the original N64 version of the game, you will not be able to claim the Bigger Deku Nut Bag if you have already collected the Poacher's Saw during Biggoron's Sword quest. This was fixed in the 3DS version of the game, and is not present in the Switch 2 remake.

Secret Grotto #10: Lost Woods

The next Secret Grotto is found beside the entrance to Goron City in the Lost Woods. Here, there's another large boulder for you to destroy using a Bomb, which reveals the Secret Grotto (shown below).

Inside, you'll find a bunch of bushes you can destroy to reveal some bugs, which is handy for if you need to scoop some up into an Empty Bottle in a pinch.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains a Gossip Stone and a chest containing five Rupees.

Secret Grotto #11: Kokiri Forest

Enter Kokiri Forest via the Lost Woods and immediately go right to arrive at a Gossip Stone and our next Secret Grotto (shown below). You can open the Grotto by playing the Song of Storms.

Inside, you'll find yourself up against three Deku Scrubs. Once they've been defeated, one of the Deku Scrubs will tell you that killing multiple mobs can cause their boss to attack, and he suggests you try it on the Guays in Hyrule Field at night.

Once the Deku Scrub leaves, a chest containing a single Rupee will appear. Boo.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains a Gossip Stone and a chest containing 20 Rupees.

Secret Grotto #12: Lake Hylia

From the warp pad in Lake Hylia (which you can quickly reach by playing the Serenade of Water song), go across the wooden bridge on your left to reach a tombstone. Go behind the tombstone and interact with it to pull it backwards to reveal a Secret Grotto (shown below).

Inside, you'll find three unlit stone torches in front of you. Stand on the stone platform in the middle of the room and use Din's Fire to light all of them simultaneously. (Din's Fire is unlocked from the Great Fairy of Magic atop Death Mountain Trail if you don't have it.)

Nothing will happen just yet, and that's because there's one more unlit torch behind you! Light this using a Fire Arrow. Afterwards, a chest containing a Red Rupee will appear.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains three Business Scrubs. One of them will sell five Bombs for 40 Rupees, another will sell five Deku Nuts for 20 Rupees, and the last one will sell 30 Deku Seeds for 40 Rupees during Link's child timeline. Later on during Link's adult timeline, the last Business Scrub sells a bundle of 30 Arrows for 70 Rupees instead.

Secret Grotto #13: Kakariko Graveyard

From the warp pad in Kakariko Graveyard (which you can quickly reach by playing the Nocturne of Shadow song), go down into the Graveyard itself. Then, interact with the back of the rightmost tombstone on the top row of graves to pull it backwards and reveal a Secret Grotto (shown below).

Inside, you'll find a chest containing a Heart Piece!

Secret Grotto #14: Kakariko Graveyard

Up next, pay a visit to the third tombstone from the right along the top row of graves in Kakariko Graveyard. Again, pull the tombstone backwards from behind to reveal the Secret Grotto beneath it (shown below).

Inside, you'll find a ReDead enemy that you'll need to defeat. Remember that you can stun these guys in place by playing the Sun's Song in the same room as them, allowing you to go in for an easy kill!

Once the ReDead has been defeated, you can open the chest behind him to claim a Red Rupee.

In the original game, the Heart Piece found in the above grave (Secret Grotto 12) is actually in here.

Secret Grotto #15: Kakariko Graveyard

Next, drop down to the bottom row of graves in Kakariko Graveyard, and open up the tombstone that's second from the left to reveal a Secret Grotto (shown below).

Inside, there'll be a huge rock directly in front of you that you'll need to destroy using a Bomb. Once the path has been cleared, press ahead to find yourself at a Fairy Fountain! You can interact with this to restore your Health and Magic Meter.

Secret Grotto #16: Kakariko Village

In Kakariko Village, you can find a Secret Grotto on the right-hand side of the House of Skulltula on your map (shown below). This is just a short walk west of the entrance to Kakariko Graveyard, and to open it, you'll need to use a Bomb.

Inside, you'll find a Gossip Stone and multiple hives that you can destroy using Arrows. Each of them will drop a blue or green Rupee.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto is in the middle of the Village. Inside, you will find two ReDeads, and defeating them will make a chest containing a Huge Rupee appear.

Secret Grotto #17: Kakariko Village

In Kakariko Village still, you'll find this Secret Grotto near the entrance to Granny's Cauldron (shown below). If you're facing Granny's Cauldron, go down the stairs and you should see this almost directly in front of you as you do, under a small roof.

Inside, you'll find a Gossip Stone and a chest containing a Blue Rupee.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto still contains a Gossip Stone and chest, but the chest contains 20 Rupees (instead of five Rupees you get from the aforementioned Blue Rupee).

Secret Grotto #18: Hyrule Field

This Secret Grotto is found in Hyrule Field and is closest to the entrance to Kakariko Village (shown below). If you're exiting (or facing away) from the Village entrance, go straight ahead and right onto a little patch of crops. You'll find the Secret Grotto hidden amongst them, and you'll need to play the Song of Storms to open it.

Inside, you'll find yourself in a very dark room. Play the Sun's Song and it'll reveal – and trap – the two ReDead enemies down here. (Keep in mind that you may need to play the song twice to trap and kill them both.)

Once the ReDead duo has been downed, a chest containing a Purple Rupee will appear.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains a Big Skulltula and a Gold Skulltula instead.

Secret Grotto #19: Hyrule Field

To find the next Secret Grotto, approach the entrance to Hyrule Castle Town then scope out the small piece of land that's across the river to the right of the entrance. Here, you'll find the Secret Grotto (shown below), and you can open it using a Bomb.

If you first visit here during Link's child timeline, you'll find a Business Scrub who isn't willing to do business with you unless you know the password (if you first come here as Child Link). Now, finding this password so you can do business with the fellow requires you to come here as Adult Link. You'll then need to return as Child Link again after finding the password.

For more help with this particular Secret Grotto, take a look at my Business Scrub password guide.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains a Gossip Stone and a chest containing five Rupees.

Secret Grotto #20: Hyrule Field

This Secret Grotto is located in the middle of the Hyrule Field (shown below), and is just northeast of Lon Lon Ranch.

Inside, you'll find a Fairy Fountain that can be used to restore your Health and Magic Meter.

Secret Grotto #21: Hyrule Field

You'll find this Secret Grotto in the northwest corner of Hyrule Field (shown below). This is west of the entrance to Hyrule Castle Town and across the small river there. You'll also need to play the Song of Storms to open it.

Inside, you'll need to defeat a Blue Tektite enemy. Once he's been dealt with, there's a pool below him that contains some crates you can destroy to collect some Rupees. You'll have an easier time grabbing these if you have the Iron Boots and Golden Scale unlocked.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto is by a lone tree that's northwest of Lon Lon Ranch, and it requires a Bomb to open. It contains a pool with a Heart Piece at the bottom, and it's recommended that you have the Iron Boots and Golden Scale unlocked to be able to easily access it.

Secret Grotto #22: Hyrule Field

The next Secret Grotto in Hyrule Field can be found near the entrance to Gerudo Valley. If you go up the sandy ramp here and right slightly, you should find a large brown rock surrounded by four grey stones. You can destroy this rock using a Bomb to reveal the Secret Grotto (shown below).

Inside, you'll find three spider webs that you can destroy using Fire Arrows. Past them, you'll find a Skulwalltula, a Gossip Stone, some pots/plants that contain Arrows and Rupees, and a cow. Yes, there's a cow here for some reason.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto still contains a cow and a Gossip Stone, but instead of the Big Skulltula and Rupees/Arrows, there's a Gold Skulltula and five Deku Nuts.

Secret Grotto #23: Hyrule Field

The next Secret Grotto in Hyrule Field is found in the forested area in the south of the map (shown below), which is behind Lon Lon Ranch and west of the entrance to Lake Hylia.

Inside, you'll find a Skullwaltula and a Gold Skulltula.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains a Gossip Stone and a chest containing 5 Rupees.

Secret Grotto #24: Hyrule Field

The next Secret Grotto in Hyrule Field is found on the eastern side of the marshes/ponds in the southeast corner of your map (shown below). This is also just south of the entrance to Kokiri Forest.

Inside, you'll find a Gossip Stone, a Skullwalltula, and some Fairy's Thoughts. If you kill the Skullwalltula here then return again during a different timeline, you can roll into the crate here to receive a Gold Skulltula too.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto is found closer to Lake Hylia's entrance and contains a Business Scrub who'll sell you a Heart Piece for 10 Rupees. You can also play the Song of Storms in the pool here to summon a Fairy.

Secret Grotto #25: Hyrule Field

The next Secret Grotto in Hyrule Field is found along the eastern edge of the area, directly between the entrances to Kokiri Forest and the Zora River (shown below). You'll need to use a Bomb to open it.

Inside, you'll find a Gossip Stone alongside a mixture of blue and green Rupees.

Secret Grotto #26: Goron City

To access this Secret Grotto, go to Goron City and jump down to the floor below you. Then, go left and look for a small cave you can enter that leads to a wooden sign which reads 'Danger Ahead: Small Children Forbidden!'.

Here, use Longshot on the target that's past the sign and you'll be dropped off at the Secret Grotto (shown below).

Inside, there's a brief puzzle involving five wooden signs for you to solve. Ultimately, you need to read each sign and determine which ones should and shouldn't be cut based on what they say.

If you need some help solving this puzzle, the solution is as follows:

  1. Attack the central sign that says 'You can cut this right away'.
  2. Attack the rightmost sign that says 'You can cut this, but you can't cut the left one'.
  3. Attack the leftmost sign that says 'Cut this is there are no other signs to cut'.

After completing the above, a chest containing a Purple Rupee will appear. You'll then need to use your Longshot upon exiting the Secret Grotto to reach the center of Goron City again.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains three Business Scrubs. One will sell five Deku Nuts for 20 Rupees, another will sell five Bombs for 40 Rupees, and the last one will sell 30 Deku Seeds for 40 Rupees during Link's child timeline. Later during Link's adult timeline, the last Business Scrub will sell a bundle of 30 Arrows for 70 Rupees instead.

Secret Grotto #27: Gerudo Valley

The next Secret Grotto is found in Gerudo Valley. Enter the area from via Hyrule Field and instead of crossing the bridge in front of you (which may or may not be broken right now depending on when you visit here), look over the cliff edge to the left of it. You should see some rocky platforms you can go down.

These lead to a large rock that you'll be able to move as long as you have the Silver Gauntlets (which you unlock during Child Link's portion of the Spirit Temple) or better. Moving this rock will reveal the Secret Grotto for this area (shown below).

Inside, you'll find a pool that contains three Octorok enemies. Once they've been dealt with, equip the Iron Boots and go down into the pool to find a chest containing a Business Scrub Seed.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains multiple Rupees as well as three Octorok enemies. Both the enemies and Rupees will also respawn each time you enter too!

Secret Grotto #28: Gerudo Valley

This Secret Grotto is found behind the Carpenter's Tent in Gerudo Valley, which is across the broken bridge in the area (shown below). To open it, you need to play the Song of Storms.

Inside, you'll find four smashable pots and a chest containing a Green Rupee. If you then use the Lenses of Truth while in here, you'll be able to find a second chest that contains a Red Rupee.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains two Business Scrubs. One will sell a Green Potion for 40 Rupees, while the other will sell a Red Potion for 40 Rupees.

Secret Grotto #29: Gerudo Fortress

It's time to head to Gerudo Fortress next, and this Secret Grotto is best tracked down after you've found all Carpenters in the area and received the Gerudo Pass. Otherwise, you'll need to stealth around the area without being spotted, which makes things needlessly difficult if you're here to do some exploring.

Upon entering Gerudo Fortress, go up the stairs and straight ahead into the central building. Then, go up the stairs in here and head left to reach a small, dark room that contains some wooden crates and smashable pots. The Secret Grotto in this area is found behind the wooden crates (shown below).

Inside, you'll find yourself in a dark room, and just up ahead there's a Big Skulltula to defeat. Continue straight ahead after this and keep your shield ready, as some pots are going to come spinning towards you. Once the coast is clear, you can open the chest in here to receive a Red Rupee.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto is actually located in the middle of the Fortress' exterior behind some wooden crates. It also contains a Fairy Fountain instead.

Secret Grotto #30: Evil Desert Colossus

From the warp pad in the middle of the Evil Desert Colossus (which you can quickly reach by playing the Requiem of Spirit song), head right and you should immediately see a large, dark rock. This can be moved using the Silver Gauntlets or better to reveal the Secret Grotto beneath it (shown below).

Inside, you'll find multiple Skullwalltula enemies and a Beamos. Clear them all out and a chest containing a Purple Rupee will appear.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains two Business Scrubs. One will sell a Green Potion for 40 Rupees, while the other will sell a Red Potion for 40 Rupees.

Secret Grotto #31: Death Mountain Crater

From the warp pad in Death Mountain Crater (which you can quickly reach by playing the Bolero of Fire song), go left across the bridge and use Longshot to cross the gap at the end. Directly in front of you after crossing this bridge is a dark, spiky rock that you can destroy using the Megaton Hammer to reveal the Secret Grotto beneath it (shown below).

Inside, you'll be ambushed by two Lizalfos. Once they have been killed, a chest containing a Purple Rupee will appear.

Secret Grotto #32: Death Mountain Crater

From the last Secret Grotto in Death Mountain Crater, exit and go along the bridge that's south of you on your map. Cross the small broken bridge that follows this, then climb up the net you come to. You'll arrive at a large brown rock surrounded by stones. Destroy this using a Bomb to reveal another Secret Grotto (shown below).

Inside, you'll find a Gossip Stone and a chest containing a Business Scrub Seed.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains a Gossip Stone and a chest containing 20 Bombs.

Secret Grotto #33: Death Mountain Trail

The next Secret Grotto is found in the middle of Death Mountain Trail, and I recommend going via Death Mountain Crater to quickly reach it.

From the Death Mountain Crater exit, run straight down the Trail in front of you (being careful of the boulders here) until you come to the small cave opening at the bottom. Pass through this, go down the net in front of you, then immediately look to your right to see the Secret Grotto (shown below).

Inside, you'll find a Gossip Stone and a cow you can talk to. All they have to say is 'Moo!' however, which isn't exactly surprising.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto still contains a cow, but rather than a Gossip Stone, you'll find some Recovery Hearts and Rupees here. These Rupees respawn each time Link enters the Grotto too.

Secret Grotto #34: Death Mountain Trail

To reach the next Secret Grotto, enter Death Mountain Trail via Goron City. If you go straight ahead and left, you'll find the Secret Grotto sitting on the edge of the cliff here (shown below), and you'll need to play the Song of Storms to open it.

Inside, you'll find yourself in a smoke-filled room that contains some Baby Dodongo enemies. Defeat them (while taking caution of the fact they explode shortly after dying), and then you're free to collect the blue and green Rupees scattered around the room. No chests here, sadly.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto contains a Gossip Stone and a chest containing a Huge Rupee.

Secret Grotto #35: Hyrule Castle - Child Link only

This next Secret Grotto can only be accessed during Link's child timeline. Enter the Hyrule Castle area via Hyrule Castle Town and go straight ahead to reach some vines you can climb. Continue along the path ahead and up a second set of vines to reach a stone walkway with a ladder; ignore the ladder and jump down to your right.

Hop into the bushes on your left next and keep left to reach an area full of flower-adorned bushes and guards (who you'll want to be careful to not get caught by). Go through this area towards the west of your map and you'll eventually come to some more vines you can climb.

Atop them, go straight ahead and then right into the moat that surrounds the castle. Swim through this and exit via the staircase on the opposite side. The Secret Grotto will now be directly in front of you, behind a tree (shown below). You'll need to play the Song of Storms to open it.

Inside, you'll find a Gossip Stone, a Gold Skulltula, two Skullwaltulas, and two pots you can destroy to get some Rupees.

In the original game, this Secret Grotto still contains a Gold Skulltula and a Gossip Stone, but it also features five Deku Seeds, five Deku Nuts, and five Bombs behind the destroyable walls inside.

Secret Grotto #36: Lon Lon Ranch - Child Link only

The next – and final – Secret Grotto is located inside of Lon Lon Ranch in Hyrule Field, and is only accessible during Link's child timeline. Enter the Ranch and you'll find it in the southeast corner of the paddock (shown below). You'll also need to use a Bomb to open it!

Inside, you'll find three Business Scrubs. One will sell bundles of five or 10 Bombs and 10 Bombchus, another will sell bundles of 10 or 30 Deku Seeds and a Magic Jar, while the last one sells five Deku Nuts, a Business Scrub Seed, and a bug.

That's it for all Secret Grotto/Secret Hole locations! For more on Link's adventure in Ocarina of Time, take a look at where to find all Empty Bottles, how to catch a Hylian Loach, and the main differences between the remake and the original game.
