After more than six years in development, Tape to Tape has recently left Early Access and is now available on PC, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The arcade hockey game mixes fast-paced action with roguelite elements, giving players a different experience each time they hit the ice.
Players take control of Angus McShaggy as he attempts to bring hockey back to its former glory. Along the way, they’ll recruit new players, manage their roster, unlock abilities and find different ways to improve their team. There are plenty of unusual stops to make, including the Training Center for attribute upgrades, the No. 1 Fan for new talents and the Infirmary, where sacrificing a player might actually benefit the rest of the squad. Losing means starting over, but each run offers new opportunities to experiment with different players, abilities and strategies.
The competition isn’t exactly traditional either, with cheating referees, farting princesses and even a team of Golfers standing in the way. Each opponent brings its own abilities and questionable interpretation of the rules, so players will need to adjust their approach to keep their run alive. There are also several squads to choose from, including the GM Squad, which focuses on signing free agents, the hard-hitting Violence Squad, the old-school Retro Squad and the Slapshot Squad, which puts more emphasis on powerful shots.
On the ice, the gameplay focuses on quick passes, big hits, one-timers, saucer passes and plenty of chaotic moments. The controls are designed to be easy to pick up, but there’s still plenty of depth for players who want to improve their positioning, timing and passing. Building the right team and figuring out which abilities work best together can make a big difference, especially as the competition gets tougher.
Friends can also get involved through local co-op, allowing them to tackle the roguelite campaign together and make decisions about upgrades and team strategy. For those looking for some friendly competition, Play Now mode supports up to 10 local players with different teams and power-ups keeping matches unpredictable.
One thing worth mentioning is that Tape to Tape does not include native online multiplayer. However, PC players can still play remotely with friends through Steam Remote Play Together or third-party services like Parsec. With the full release now available across consoles and PC, players can jump into the campaign or settle things on the ice with friends.
