Most shooting stars are here for a fleeting moment. Faraway has rather bigger ambitions.
This minimalist arcade-puzzle game from solo creator Steph Thirion asks players to guide a shooting star through an ever-changing universe, drawing constellations to harvest energy and keep the journey alive.
Published by Annapurna Interactive, it’s launching on Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, with Xbox Play Anywhere support. The Xbox Store price is still to be confirmed.

Drawing A Longer Life Among The Stars
Faraway is pretty simple, but there’s a clever challenge lurking beneath its minimal presentation. You control a shooting star that must connect with other stars to harvest their energy. Create constellations, collect enough energy to extend your life and push your score higher.
The interesting part is that you’re free to shape those constellations yourself. Taking risks and attempting more advanced techniques can bring additional energy and points, rewarding players who are willing to experiment rather than simply sticking to safe patterns.
Every run begins from scratch, with the universe generated in real time around your performance. As your abilities improve, you’ll travel faster, reach more challenging regions of space and hopefully climb higher on the leaderboards. It certainly feels like the sort of experience where a few minutes can easily turn into an extended attempt to beat a previous score.
More Than Just An Endless Score Chase
Alongside its endless arcade mode, Faraway includes 16 handcrafted puzzle stages. These provide a different way to approach the game’s mechanics, encouraging players to rethink how they connect stars and discover techniques that might prove useful in the main experience.
The controls are designed to feel fluid and approachable, although mastering the game is another matter entirely. That balance between an easy introduction and a demanding skill ceiling is central to Faraway’s appeal.
A Universe Created By One Person
There’s a bit of a story behind Faraway too. Steph Thirion, the game designer, creative coder and musician behind the project, has spent more than a decade creating it single-handedly. Thirion is also known for the cult game Eliss, and that background in experimental interactive design is evident in Faraway’s approach.
Its visuals are generated entirely in real time, while interactive music helps turn each session into an audiovisual experience. Rather than relying on a conventional narrative or a series of elaborate environments, the game focuses on the feeling of travelling through a universe that responds to your performance.
Faraway looks like one to return to repeatedly, whether that’s for a quick attempt between other games or a much longer session chasing a new personal best. A shooting star may not usually get much time to shine, but this one is determined to make every second count.
